QUESTION

We have a Windows PC that uses the NSG50 to access the Internet. However, when we use www.speedtest.net to determine the throughput, we noticed that download speed hardly reached past 100Mbps. This should not be the case since we are subcribing under a 600Mbps download rate from our ISP.

Why is the throughput so low?

ANSWER

First thing to consider, is that the NSG50 throughput may not exceed 300Mbps due to the NSG's application layer capabilities. This has been stated in the specifications section of the datasheet.

As for why the throughput cannot reach 300Mbps, this can be attributed to some security features that are enabled by default.

  • GATEWAY > Firewall > Application monitor
  • GATEWAY > Security Filtering > Detection
  • GATEWAY > Security Filtering > Prevention

Lastly, the WAN throughput indicated on the datasheet is measured using UDP traffic. SpeedTest.com generates TCP traffic to measure its upload/download speed and may not produce similar results.
