QUESTION

We have a Windows Server running several virtual machines in Hyper-V, which all uses the Zyxel L3 switch as the VM's default gateway.

However, connection to these VMs running in Hyper-V are unstable when the network adapters are configured with "switch independent" NIC teaming.

How do I configure the Zyxel switch to allow routing across clients from different subnets to the VMs in another while still allowing load balancing across multiple network adapters?

ANSWER

Windows Server NIC teaming uses "dynamic" load balancing mode by default.

The solution provided by NIC Teaming "dynamic" load balancing conflicts with the Zyxel L3 switch's routing solution.

This causes inconsistent routing between the clients from one subnet to the VMs in another.

It is highly recommended to change the setting from "dynamic" mode to "hyper-v port" mode.

The only difference between "hyper-v port" mode and "dynamic" mode is that "hyper-v port" load balances traffic across the NIC team ports according to VM. This causes traffic from one VM to travel across one link, while another VM travels across the other link.
