How MGS3750-28F calculates the bps and pps rate of the last 5 minutes?

Question

When I enter the command “show statistics interface ethernet 0/0/X” the system will displays “last 5 minutes input(and output) rate X bits/sec, Y packets/sec”. Could you show me MGS3750-28F how to calculate the bps and pps rate of the last 5 minutes?

Answer

The algorithms for last the 5 minutes input/output rate X bits/sec, Y packets/sec are as below.

A. For bits/sec:

  1. When Time > 5 mins: (The current value on the counter - the value of the counter 300 seconds ago)÷300sec= last 5 mins input/output rate X bits/sec.
And, X displayed by the system will not be updated in less than 4 seconds.
  1. When Time < 5mins:  The current value on the counter÷300sec= last 5 mins input/output rate X bits/sec
And, X displayed by the system will not be updated in less than 4 seconds.

B. For packets/sec:

  1. When Time > 5 mins: the current value on the counter - the value of the counter 300 seconds ago)÷300sec and then rounding off the result = last 5 mins input/output rate Y packets/sec.
And, Y displayed by the system will not be updated in less than 4 seconds.
  1. When Time < 5mins: the current value on the counter÷300sec and then rounding off the result = last 5 mins input/output rate Y packets/sec.
And, Y displayed by the system will not be updated in less than 4 seconds.
