What does Passive PoE mean?

Question

The datasheets of the ZyXEL PoE switch models shows that these switches support 802.3 af/at. However, some other PoE switches or powered devices support "Passive" PoE.

What does Passive PoE mean? Can Passive PoE work with 802.3 af/at standard devices?

Answer

Passive PoE or Passive 24V, is a non-standard implementation of Power over Ethernet. Some vendor's devices, such as the Ubiquiti's access points, require a unique voltage input.

This means that a Passive PoE device is not compatible with the 802.3 af/at standard. Furthermore, due to the difference in voltage rating, issues such as damaging a Passive PoE end device is very likely to occur.

A Passive PoE device comes with its own PoE adapter and must not be connected directly to any 802.3 af/at PoE switches.
