How can I verify that the ZyXEL unmanaged switch is functioning properly?

Question

Is there any quick and easy way to test whether an unmanaged ZyXEL switch is functioning properly?

Answer

For basic testing, simply connect two PCs to  the unmanaged switch and ping from one device to the other.

[ PC-A ] ------------- [ Unmanaged Switch ] ------------- [ PC-B ]
IP: 192.168.1.1                                                                 IP: 192.168.1.2

Go to the command prompt on PC-A and type:
ping 192.168.1.2 -t

If the switch is working properly, there should not be any packet loss in the span of your test.

If you prefer to perform a test that verifies the spec of the unmanaged switch, you can perform a throughput test using IPERF3. IPERF3 is a free software for Windows or Linux OS that tests the bandwidth of your links.

Using the same topology as above:

Go to the command prompt on PC-A and type:
iperf3 -s    <-s means server>

Go to the command prompt on PC-B and type:
 iperf3 -c 192.168.1.1       <-c means client>

The result should show that the links are running at 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps depending on the link speed.
