MSAN overbooking

Question

Do we have some calculation examples, which we can show to a customer to convince him that our backplane and uplink speed is enough to handle a full-equipped chassis?

Answer

Both IES-6000M & IES-5000M have 1GbE bandwidth at the backplane between each line card slot and MSC slot.

As for IES-5112M/5106M/5005M, the bandwidth at each line card slot is 2GbE.

All 20 ports on one ELC1220G-55 have 100M service:

  • IES-6000M & IES-5000M have concentration (2:1)
  • IES-5112M/5106M/5005M, on the other hand, can support non-blocking service (no concentration) if there is only one ELC

However, if the aggregation switch ring is 1GbE, then there will be concentration between the DSLAM and the aggregation switch. If the aggregation switch ring is 10GbE and the end customer is using 10G MSC (MSC1224Gx) and five ELC 1220G-55 on IES-5106M, then it is still possible to have non-blocking service from the subscriber to aggregation layer.

In reality, all ISPs have concentration at least from the aggregation layer onwards. This is why Ethernet traffic is designed to support prioritization.
